Rebecca Salter RA (current President of the Royal Academy) in conversation with Tom Marks (former Editor of Apollo magazine)

Rebecca Salter sometimes compares her paintings and drawings to sculptures. With her attention to surfaces, sometimes pricked or layered with muslin, her care for materials, and the deliberate restraint of her palette, her work often has the qualities of an object more than those of an image.

In this CHAT, Rebecca will explore how her distinctive techniques and style emerged, looking back at her training in ceramics and her extensive studies in Japan, and discuss her meticulous approach to materials and mark-marking – as well as the type of engagement that might demand of her viewers. The conversation will also touch on Rebecca’s role as President of the Royal Academy – and how she balances the demands of that role with the attentiveness encapsulated in her work.

Tom Marks is a writer and art critic. From 2013–22 he was Editor of Apollo art magazine, to which he continues to contribute a monthly column on the relationship between art and food. He has written feature interviews or essays on many contemporary artists, from Giuseppe Penone to Caroline Walker.
